The Pulaski Parks and Facilities Department is a comprehensive, full-service leisure agency providing a variety of year round recreational opportunities for the citizens of Pulaski. The Department manages over 800 acres of parkland, several recreational facilities and trails, Gatewood Park and Reservoir, the Pulaski Senior Center, and Historic Calfee Park.
Over 2,000 boys and girls and 500 adults participate in a variety of year round leagues operated by Pulaski County. There are many Town parks, playgrounds, and ballfields for residents to enjoy.
Gatewood Park and Reservoir encompasses over 700 acres in the heart of Jefferson National Forest, including the 160-acre reservoir, the Town’s water impoundment. Open from April to October, the park boasts a 42-site campground complete with water and electric hook-ups, hot water, shower house, playground, and many beautiful waterfront campsites. There is also a day use area for picnicking. Boats, electric motors, canoes, and paddleboats are for rent in the waterside camp store and office. No petroleum-powered motors are allowed on the lake.
The Pulaski Senior Center, located on Washington Avenue across from the Post Office, is a familiar and popular spot among the area’s senior citizens. Offering a wide variety of activities such as ceramics, bridge, coffee hour, potluck dinners, round table discussions, and trips and tours, the Center serves over 7,400 visitors annually.
Historic Calfee Park, built in 1935, is primarily a minor league baseball stadium maintained by the Parks and Facilities Department. It has been home to the Phillies, Braves, and the Rangers of the Appalachian League, and is now home to the Pulaski BlueJays. Current major leaguers David Justice, Steve Avery, Javy Lopez, and others began their professional careers at Calfee Park. The park is a unique facility that has been featured in Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, and Life Magazine, and is listed on the State and National Historic Registers. Many community events such as concerts and large gatherings are also held at Calfee Park.
The Pulaski Parks and Facilities Department is a very active, year round operation that strives to provide a variety of services to as broad a cross section of the community as possible. It is also a governmental agency that receives support from, and welcomes input from, individuals, civic groups, and other organizations throughout the area.
