The Pulaski Fire Department will be joining fire departments across the United States in observing Fire Prevention Week. For the last 85 years Fire Prevention Week has been observed in honor of the victims of the Great Chicago Fire that occurred on October 9, 1871. During this devastating fire 17,000 buildings were destroyed, 250 people killed and 100,000 people left homeless.
During September and October the Fire Marshal’s Office and Fire Department present fire safety programs at Pulaski Middle School, Critzer Elementary, Pulaski Elementary,
YMCA Daycare, Head Start, Presbyterian Church Daycare, Christian Academy Daycare and reading time at the Pulaski Library. These programs help spread the fire safety message through the children back home to the parents and other family members. The Fire Marshal also presents fire safety programs for area civic groups.
Fire Prevention Week is October 5th through October 11th this year. The Pulaski Fire Department attend church at the Dora Highway Babtist Church on Sunday October 5th. Fire Fighters will be traveling to other area departments to help them observe Fire Prevention Week. On Thursday October 9th the department will have their equipment on display on Jefferson Avenue in front of the fire station. The equipment will be on display until 6:00pm when the lineup begins for the Fire Prevention Parade.
The parade will lineup at the shopping center on RT#99 in front of Food Lion starting at 6:00pm. The parade will start at 7:00pm and travel down RT#99 to Main Street, up Main Street to Jefferson Avenue turning left on Jefferson and disbanding in the Maple Shade Shopping Center on Commerce Street. The parade will have fire trucks, rescue vehicles, ambulances, police cars, scouts, football teams, cheerleaders and the Pulaski County High School Band. The Fire Parade will start on time regardless of weather conditions.
The theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is “Prevent Home Fires”. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths and heating is the leading cause of home fire deaths.
